Sober style and unique line for this beautiful cheese knife designed by Christian Ghion and hand crafted entirely at Coutellerie Nontronaise in the Périgord region of France. The forged glossy finish stainless steel blade, is stamped "Nontron". The handle is made of ebony, a precious and hardwood, which gives a smooth and warm feel particularly comfortable to the hand. 16cm blade. Not dishwasher safe.
Nontron is the name of a small town in the Périgord region of France. The Nontron knife has ancestry and has inspired many legends. An original Nontron knife is recognisable by its shape and its distinctive wood burned symbol. Experts agree on the fact that the Nontron knife is the oldest French folding knife originating from the sixteenth century. The way the Nontron knife is crafted today is nearly identical to the way it was made in sixteenth century - individual craftsmen using their own hand tools to create a work of art. The Nontron factory is a tiny building housing a small number of craftsmen and antique tools. It is the oldest continuously operating cutlery forge in France. Each Nontron knife is a work of art created by less than 20 artisan knife-makers. The blade is forged and not stamped, then carefully tempered in the iron rich water of the Périgord. In 2000, the new workshop designed by Luc-Arsène Henry opened its doors. Since then, several designers such as Olivier Gagnère, Eric Raffy, Stefania di Petrillo and Christian Ghion have lent their talents to the reinterpretation of the oldest French knife.
40 steps are necessary to make a Nontron knife. Each piece is manufactured from the start to finish by the same person. All blades are forged at Forge de Laguiole workshop in Laguiole village, south-central France.
Christian Ghion, was born in 1958. Ghion is considered as one of the best designer of its generation. Christian Ghion built his career on a series of fortunate meetings. In 1976 he started studying law for 5 years before a change of direction towards creation and design. In 1982, he met the architect Patrick Nadeau and together they founded their design agency in 1987. Three years later, they won the much thought after « Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris ». In the following years he met the late Andrée Putman, who became his guardian angel and also Philippe Starck. Ghion started working solo back in 1998 and his work was focussed on interior design and architecture. This is in 2005 that he designed a contemporary boudoir for the Chantal Thomass shop in Paris. Later on Ghion designed French Chef, Pierre Gagnaire’s restaurants in Paris and in Tokyo. The popularity of Christian Ghion is influential enough to be exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and at the “Fondation Cartier” in Paris. In addition, he was honoured, in 2006, as a “Chevailer des Arts et des Lettres”.
