  1. Domaine de la Romanee Conti - Grand Echezeaux

Deep, luminous, lovely colour, indescribably complex nose, toasty, intriguing fruit, very slight whiff of vanilla and tea; sweet, rich, mouthflling; good length, substantial and hard. Tasting notes by Michael Broadbent MW

  2. Château Léoville Las Cases - Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Julien

The late Michel Delon always thought that this was the greatest vintage he had produced. We often tasted it side by side with the 1982, because I always preferred the latter vintage. Of course, the two vintages are quite different in style, with the 1986 a monument to classicism, with great tannin, extraordinary delineation, and a huge, full-bodied nose of sweet, ripe cassis fruit intermixed with vanilla, melon, fruitcake, and a multitude of spices. The wine has always been phenomenally concentrated, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous. The wine still seems young, yet it is hard to believe it is not close to full maturity. It is a great example of Leoville Las Cases, and another compelling reason to take a serious look at the top Cabernet Sauvignon-based Medocs of 1986. - Robert Parker

  3. Château Lynch Bages

Impressive finesse for the vintage, with beautiful, fresh tobacco, cedar and coffee aromas and flavours. Full-bodied and very silky with a fine, long peppery finish.
While this shows a definite maturity, I would never have guessed it was 29 years old - still going strong.

  4. Château Cheval Blanc

"The complex, explosively fragrant 1999 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc. It is already showing well, which is a good sign for a wine that traditionally is reserved early in life, but puts on weight and richness in the bottle. Stylistically, this wine is probably cut from the same mold as vintages such as 1985, 1966, and 1962. The colour is a dense ruby with purple nuances. Once past the blockbuster bouquet of menthol, leather, black fruits, licorice, and mocha, the wine reveals medium body, extraordinary elegance, purity, and sweet, harmonious flavours with no hard edges. This is a seamless beauty of finesse, charm, and concentration. The 1999 is an exciting Cheval Blanc to drink relatively young. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2022." - Wine Advocate

  6. Warre's Vintage Port

An outstanding port, with the caramel overtones of great colheita intermingled with the bright, ripe and deep red and black fruit flavours of vintage port. Vibrant and youthful, both on the nose and in the mouth, with a nice spirity kick on the end palate. A very rare vintage to find at all, let alone in Mathusalem.

  7. Château Lynch Bages

Medium colour but still still quite a powerful nose. A rich and creamy texture with great depth of chewy blackcurrant fruit. Fleshy but structured. This is still very good indeed. Impressive - even more so when revealed to be 1981! 17 points

  8. Taylors Vintage Port 2000 Magnum

Rich magenta colour. Powerful, intense, black fruit and cherry aromas with lovely fragrant aromatic notes. On the mouth this wine is in perfect harmony with beautifully balanced fruit and tannins. Rich, elegant, luscious black fruit flavours. Enormous concentration with again this attractive scented quality coming through. Long rich finish. Very stylish.

  9. Larmandier Bernier 'Longitude'

'Longitude' is a sublime biodynamic champagne created by one of the most accomplished winemakers in the region, Pierre Lamandier. Superb and pure it shows a wonderful balance on the palate with a textural richness paired with a vivid minerality due to the terroir. Expressive, elegant and long finish. Quite sophisticated.

  10. Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine shows deep dense plum colour with great density. The nose opens with anise and spice before moving into rich layers of blackberry and cherry compote. All that great concentrated fruit is beautifully complemented with barrel tones of vanilla and clove. It is quite youthful and lively on the palate with a good firm acid core - great for food pairing - and abundant velvety tannin. Complex layers of black fruits through the mid palate, with good barrel spice underlayment throughout, are nicely complemented by bright red fruit on the finish. This wine is quite approachable so young, but it will definitely improve with additional time in the bottle, if you've got the patience. If you do plan to drink it now, I'd recommend decanting it in order to help it open up even more.
