France - Rhône

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Cotes-Rotie. In these vineyards of over 2400 years old you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment. Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 when the latter was victim to a brutal illness rendering him blind. Marcel's hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis GRIPPAT estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage as well as the Domaine de VALLOUIT in Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.

Cotes-Du-Rhone Red - 2006
A blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, the 2005 Cotes du Rhone is a real head turner. Full-bodied, with a deep ruby/purple color and sweet notes of berry fruit, a hint of road tar, and some pepper, the wine is dense, chewy, ripe, and a surprisingly big mouthful of juicy, velvety-textured wine to drink over the next 3-4 years. The Rhone Valley's most successful producer continues to ratchet up the level of quality of his Cotes du Rhone cuvees, of which he produces hundreds of thousands of cases. Both Marcel Guigal and his son Philippe realize how important quality is and demonstrate that commitment in these lower level wines. They just get better and better, which is incredibly admirable.

Cotes-Du-Rhone White - 2007
Pale golden colour. Lovely enticing fresh nose, like a late spring crisp morning. Hint of apricots from the 55% Viognier. Good length, very attractive mouth filling wine, with fine attack. Very good alternative to Chardonnay. Lovely aperitif, or to accompany with fish or chicken.

Crozes-Hermitage Red - 2003
2003 Crozes-Hermitage : Medium red. Smoky, meaty and wild on the noze, with undeveloped cherry and dark beery aroma s along with a suggestion of leather. A supple midweight with flavors of dark cherry, plum, licorice and smoked meat. Finishes sweet, meaty and persistant, with supple tannins. The wines are mainly on steep slopes from the villages of Gervans, Mercurol, Larnage and Crozes-Hermitage.

Gigondas - 2001
This Gigondas 2001 is the perfect example of a great southern Rh™ne wine. The Grenache exhibits the ripeness of the fruits and the charming texture of the wine, the syrah is showing its true color and peppery aromas and eventually, the mourvdre is expressing the big tannins and the massive texture of this superb wine. Vinified in the purest tradition, this wine is opulent now and will age well for the next 8 or 10 years. By Philippe GUIGAL Winemaker

Saint-Joseph - 2003
Guigal fashions two cuvees of white St.-Joseph from the vineyard sites he purchased from Grippat. The soft, delicious 2003 St.-Joseph blanc exhibits loads of buttered citrus, orange skin, and white peaches. It is a beautifully fleshy, medium-bodied effort that spent time in both tank and wood." - (87-88) - The Wine Advocate by Robert M. Parker Jr - 12/04

Condrieu - 2006
This wine posses a penetrating fragrance of flowers, white peaches, apricot and honey. Medium bodied with a decent acidity, and copious quantities of fresh, lively fruity, this vintage is delicate, elegant and delicious drinking over the next 3-4 years. Perfect as an aperitif, this wine is the ideal matching with traditional French food such as Foie Gras and delicate Asian food.
750ml €49.50
' Luminescence' Condrieu - 2003
Dominated by an intensely deep and elegant aromatic bouquet, with very marked notes above all of apricot, with undertones of white peaches and pear. Very round and full. Above all is the match between elegance and depth. Very opulent texture that assures that this is a GREAT Condrieu that will keep its freshness. This wine, despite the intensity of each character is quite extraordinary in its overall balance. We have never seen its like in Condrieu in the history of the House of GUIGAL.

Chateau D'Ampuis- Cotes-Rotie - 2001
The 2001 Chateau d'Ampuis suggests a wine with far greater depth, more structure, higher acidity, and a long, heady finish. Six parcels were rated between 89 and 96 points". A wine from a tannic and muscular vintage due to the hot climate. Solid tannins, well rounded by long oak ageing. Rating (91-95) The Wine Advocate

Ermitage 'Ex-Voto' White - 2003
A candidate for perfection, the compelling 2003 Hermitage Ex-Voto blanc possesses off the charts richness, honeyed complexity, depth, and power that must be tasted to be believed. It should last for half a century. - (96-100) - The Wine Advocate by Robert M. Parker Jr - 12/04 2003 E. Guigal Ermitage Blanc Ex-Voto Very rich, waxy aromas of apricot, honey, smoked nuts and camphor. Offers compelling pear and apricot fruit, with superb framing acidity for the vintage contributing shape and structure. Offers outstanding chewiness and solidity, and finishes with superb length and spice. This fruit was harvested on August 22 with 15. 5% potential alcohol! A great white Hermitage in the making.
750ml €169.00
Ermitage 'Ex-Voto' Red - 2001
Other than the luxury cuvee of Hermitage Ex-Voto, it is the finest Hermitage Guigal has ever made. As for the 2001 Hermitage Ex-Voto, there will be 4,500 bottles produced from Guigal's favorite parcels in Hermitage, Bessards (30%), Greffieux (30%), Ermrte (20%), and Murets (20%) . With 15% alcohol as well as amazing levels of licorice, camphor, and creme de cassis, massive body, low acidity, huge concentration, and a 70+ second finish, it is an amazing effort the likes of which I have rarely seen in my twenty-six years of tasting experience. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. - (95-98+) - The Wine Advocate by Robert M. Parker Jr - 12/04 2001 E. Guigal Hermitage Ex-Voto Bright, full, saturated ruby. Explosive aromas of black raspberry, blackberry and licorice, with a suggestion of medicinal austerity. Then raw and primary but incredibly thick, with a richness verging on port-like. Almost too big for the mouth. Actually more of a fruit bomb on the nose today and altogether more serious on the palate. If the 2001 La Landonne is an essence of syrah, this is an essence of Hermitage. Truly a black hole of a wine: there's virtually no sign of the new oak, and the wine has a sappiness that belies its pH of close to 4. 0. Philippe says the Guigals were the first to harvest Hermitage in 2003, and yet this wine is a whopping 15. 5% alcohol! - 96-99

Ermitage ''Ex-Voto'' Red - 2005
The 2005 Hermitage Ex-Voto Blanc is an amazing offering. Honeyed quince, white truffle, marzipan, hazelnut, marmalade, and buttered citrus characteristics emerge from the aromas and flavors of this gigantic, well-endowed, massive, dry white. It has formidable concentration. This 2005 should last for 40-50 years. The 2005 Hermitage Ex-Voto, which will spend 42 months in 100% new oak, possesses a blue/black colour as well as a gorgeous perfume of black fruits.

'La Landonne' Cote-Rotie - 1987
Opaque purple, bordering on black in colour, La Landonne's aromatics are the most subdued of the 1987s. Although still closed, this wine is very powerful, rich, thick, and represents the essence of the Syrah grape. That earthy, mineral, truffle, licorice component is just beginning to poke its head through this massively framed wine. It is remarkable that this vintage produced a wine of such extraordinary concentration and richness. Anticipated maturity

'La Landonne' Cote-Rotie - 2003
Dense purple to the rim with a nose of graphite, creosote, earth, olives, and black, black, black fruits, the primordial, full-bodied, monumental 2003 Cote Rotie La Landonne is amazing stuff. I suspect this is more akin to a dry vintage port than most Cote Roties ever tend to be, but the purity, the richness, the texture, the length are all out of this world. This wine does need some patience on the part of its purchasers, probably five years, more likely 8-10, but then one of the worldÕs most compelling elixirs will be at its peak for another 20-30+ years. *** Robert Parker Score 100 points ***

''La Landonne'' Cote-Rotie - 2005
Another candidate for perfection is the 2005 Cote Rotie La Landonne. Its inky/blue/purple color is followed by a perfume of confit of duck, smoked meats, blackberries, espresso, and tapenade. Incredibly complex with superb concentration, amazing depth, full body, and huge tannins in the finish, it will not be ready to drink for 5-8 years; it should keep for 30-35 years. 'La Landonne'- Cote-Rotie - 2006
The 2006 Cote Rotie La Landonne may merit a three digit score by the time it is bottled. A dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary bouquet of burning embers, espresso roast, black currants, blackberry liqueur, and pain grille. With aeration, bacon fat and licorice characteristics also emerge. The sweetness of the tannin, the extraordinary intensity of the flavors, and the remarkable finish suggest this is another legendary effort from Marcel Guigal and his son, Philippe. 'La Mouline'- Cote-Rotie - 2000
This is made from 100% Cote Blonde fruit. It sees almost four years in new oak before release. Guigal has the longest experience of using new oak in all of Rhone, and has experimented with all sorts of oaks, all sorts of toasting and all sorts of tonneliers. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, but goes through malolactic and ageing in barrel - a Burgundian technique. Philippe will de-stem according to vintage conditions; all stems come off in less ripe, 'green'years, but he prefers partial de-stemming where possible. The colour is a dense, even dark crimson. It has a deep, sonorous, cherry and herb-scented nose, with gentle toast and a chocolaty depth, and a real sense of plushness. There are little notes of blueberry and floral highlights too, in a pure but complex fragrance. Lovely fruit on the palate here; really fine, rich, ripe cassis and black cherry fruit, with a medium-bodied, silky mouthfeel and very smooth texture. The finish has a great suppleness and a bittersweet chocolate and espresso depth, but it stays fresh, cherry-lifted and harmonious in the finish. Very good length too, with spicy, rich and toasty notes playing against fine acidity and a tight tannic structure. Outstanding.

'La Mouline'- Cote-Rotie - 1985
Red with visibly clear browning at the rim. This wine smells like a Christmas tree. All the pine needles mixed with spices like cinnamon Scandinavian cookies and wax scents from lit candle lights. And the peppar scents are there. Sweet seductive completely resolved and ready to go this wine was hugely structured intense and concentrated fruity juicy spicy and almost liquer like. The complexity was staggering and the aftertaste stupendously long. ***Robert Parker 100 points ***

'La Mouline' Cote-Rotie - 2003
The 2003 Cote Rotie La Mouline is by far the most delicate and elegant wine (11% Viognier is co-fermented with 89% Syrah). but the enormous aromatics of spring flowers intermixed with creme de cassis, black raspberry, mocha, caramel, and cola, and enormous full-bodied opulence and striking velvety, seamless texture make for one of the most memorable wines anyone could every drink. This wine should age effortlessly for 25-30 or more years. *** Robert Parker Score 100 points ***

''La Mouline''- Cote-Rotie - 2005
The black/purple-colored 2005 Cote Rotie La Mouline offers up scents of soy, bacon fat, barbecue smoke, espresso roast, and a hint of caramelized chocolate. 'La Turque' Cote-Rotie - 2003
A pure aromatic smorgasbord is offered by the 2003 Cote Rotie La Turque, which has an amazing aromatic profile of espresso coffee interwoven with scorched earth, tar, truffle, incense, blackberry, bacon fat, and flowers. Powerful, thick flavours ooze across the palate with a viscous texture, amazing purity, and just enough acidity and tannin to give uplift and precision to this remarkable tour de force in winemaking. Of the 2003s, this is also approachable, but ideally 2-5 years of cellaring would be suggested, and the wine will evolve for at least 30 more years. ***Robert Parker Score 100 points***

Hermitage 'La Chapelle' - 1998
Even crimson colour with orange at rim. Really pungently aromatic on the nose. Grilled meats and smoke, but vivid raspberry fruit too. Very good indeed. Needs time.

Hermitage 'La Chapelle' - 2005
This wine is outstanding, dark ruby/purple-coloured with notes of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, and some melted licorice and gamey animal notes. It is medium to full-bodied, has high tannin, moderate acidity, and admirable purity and depth. The Jaboulets sold this old family firm, founded in the early eighteen hundreds, to the Frey family, major investors in the Billecart-Salmon Champagne house and proprietors of Chateau La Lagune in the Medoc. A new winemaking team, which includes the brilliant Bordeaux Professor Denis Dubourdieu for the white wines, has been installed. As these tasting notes demonstrates, they seem to be moving quickly to erase some of the lackluster wines produced from the mid-1990s through 2004. However, much still needs improvement. I suspect, given the Frey's resources as well as their accomplishments at Chateau La Lagune, this historic firm is in good hands, and the listless quality of these releases will be forgotten very quickly. A saturated dark plum/garnet colour with amber at the edge is followed by an attractive smoky, underbrush, and truffle-scented wine with coffee, smoke, cedar, and jammy cassis/plum-like fruit. Ruby, though very pale. Older wine. Huge, gorgeous nose. Tobacco, volcanic ash, grilled-meats, pepper and spice, but a streak of focussed raspberry fruit too. Notes of liquorice. Beautifully delineated fruit on the palate. Superb integration of components. Fine acidity, fine tannins. Really dense, creamy texture. Full of fruit, but serious, chewy, structured character. The vineyards of Crozes Hermitage surround the hill of Hermitage and so are subject to similar climatic conditions, though they do not rise as high, nor are they on the steepest slopes. The difference between the wines of Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage can be mainly attributed to the soil. As you come down the Hermitage slopes the soil profile schanges from hard granite rock to denser, sandier, clay rich soils. Alain Graillot has been producing wines reflecting his integrity and high standards since 1985. Born in the Northern Rhône, he left to pursue a career in business, but returned home to his dream of creating great wines. Without the opportunity of stepping into an existing family winery, Alain undertook formal studies in Burgundy while seeking the guidance and inspiration of the best of the new generation of winemakers including Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac. He now has some 15ha in Crozes Hermitage itself as well as 1ha in St-Joseph. He matures his red wines in one year old french oak barrels from Burgundy.

Crozes-Hermitage - 2006
Medium red. Classic syrah aromas of spiced blackcurrant, cherry, violet and smoked meat. Very smooth on the palate, with sweet, focused red and dark berry flavors and silky, harmonious tannins. This could pass for a ripe New World pinot for its texture and sweetness. Finishes juicy and persistent.

The Giraud family is one of Châteauneuf du Pape’s oldest, and has been growing vines in the area since the 13th Century. The wines are phenomenal and absolutely bowled us over when we first visited in 2005. Their success derives from holdings in top vineyards, and an approach that effectively combines the experience of several lifetimes with up-to-date oenological techniques. The estate is run by Marie and François Giraud, children of Michel Maret’s cousin, Pierre. Marie is Châteauneuf du Pape’s only woman oenologist, and Pierre exudes pride in her achievement of bringing some approachability and charm to the wines, without sacrificing their longevity. François follows in Pierre’s footsteps in being the vineyard specialist, and attributes the estate’s success in the difficult 2003 vintage to his father’s long experience.

Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc - 2006

What a Rhone! Exhuberant and heady, with pure, ripe fruit, coffee, allspice, and black pepper. However, this Cotes du Rhone exhibits balance and finesse not often found in wines from this region. Fruit and tannins combine on the palate to give a sturdy wine of real elegance. The Label was designed by our cousin the famous architect Rudy Ricciotti.
