France - South West

Tucked deep within the Pyrenees along the Spanish border, Irouleguy is the western-most appellation in France. In contrast to the masculine peaks of the Alps on the other side of the country, the green grass-covered mounds that comprise the Pyrenees are rounder, giving one a sense of security rather than peril. The green fields lining their sides are scattered with grazing cows and sheep. In the valleys, white houses with red rooves cluster together in small, picturesque towns. Irouleguy is part of the Pays Basque (Basque Country) that extends north to Bayonne and West to Bilbao, Spain. It is an area rich in tradition, folklore and cuisine. Grapes are planted along the slopes of the mountains surrounding the town of St. Jean Pied de Port and eight other villages that make up the region of Irouleguy. These vines are the last remains of the huge Basque vineyard complex that dates back to the eleventh century.

Domaine De Mignaberry - 2003
Irouleguy is an appellation in the heart of the French Basque country not far from Biarritz. The vines are grown on steep terraces - up to 400m - and have to be harvested by hand. From the glorious 2005 vintage, Mignaberry (the name means "old vines") is a stunning red made with a high proportion of Tannat (60%) blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Similar in style to a really good Graves from Bordeaux. Admirable with roast pork or a nice cut of beef. Bronze Medal at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Le Vin est une Fete - 2007
This amazing red comes from Cotes du Marmandais, not far from Agen. Elian works his vineyard with fanatical dedication without chemicals. A blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 20% Abouriou (a local grape). Aged 12 months in oak barrels this is an authentic, crunchy and tonic wine. Very ripe fruits on the palate. Medium bodied with a long finish and no obviousness of oak on the palate. Organic and stunning value. ❝An outstanding wine to be enjoyed with a nice piece of beef or stew

La Pie Colette - 2008
Catherine and Jean-Mary Le Bihan are very meticulous in the vineyards and they use exclusively organic fertilizers. Merlot is the main grape in La Pie Colette with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has seen no oak. Notes of ripe juicy red fruits are displayed harmoniously on the palate. Mouthfilling and nicely balanced with soft and gentle finish.
