Pedro Basta - 2007
Dark, dense, full-bodied, with ripe, spicy, red-berry and blackcurrant fruit and touches of licorice, chocolate and vanilla; fine chewy tannins. A red with southern Portuguese flavours, but Douro polish, from an estate - Quinta do Centro - belonging to UK wine writer Richard Mayson. You can drink it now, but it should be good for another four years. 13.5%
Douro Branco - 2007
It is right in the centre of the Douro Valley that winemaker, Francisco Olazabal, has been making wines that are showing both consistency and elegance. This white Douro is a blend of local grapes including a high proportion of Rabigato and a dash of the fresh Verdelho grape. The wine conveys melon notes and a spicy floral aroma. Lovely succulent fruit on the palate with hints of hazelnuts and biscuits.
Douro Tinto - 2007
This Tinto is a blend of local grape varieties including Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. A very attractive wine, whose lovely colour gives off red plum glints. A fantastic palette of flavours - red fruits, violets, herbs - from this full long wine, which displays very good harmony. Sampling this Douro charms, without further delay, is a must! ❝It has lovely pure concentrated plums with a nice tannic kick on the finish. Great value wine that I will certainly return to.❞ The Irish Times
The fifth generation, Eduard Dirk Niepoort is ahead of the business, since the formal retirement of Eduard Rudolph Niepoort in 2005. Dirk, born in 1964, discovered the world of wine during the studies in Switzerland. In 1987 Dirk joined his father Rolf Niepoort in the family business and was challenged to innovate maintaining the good traditions. The first important step was the acquisition of the first own vineyards: Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region that traditionally produces the best Port Wines;15 hectares of vineyards were newly planted, and 10 hectares 60-year old vines were carefully maintained. Owning Quintas and vineyards in the Douro was an important step in the port wine and the first step for the creation of Niepoort wines. Dirk's passion for wines and the humble respect and curiosity for the DOURO terroir defined the team spirit over the last two decades and is a constant inspiration and challenge to the team. Dirk's sister, Verena Niepoort, joined Niepoort team as director in 2005.
Charme - 2006
Charme is an elegant wine with mature tannins. Small details make the production of Charme a risky challenge but it also makes the wine so unique and rare. Small, sheltered vineyards with low production from vale Mendiz in the Pinho valley are the key element for Charme.
Redoma Branco - 2007
The vineyards for the Redoma White are all above 400 metres, up to 800 metres, thus having a cooler (particularly at night) and longer ripening, all vineyards are over 60 years old, 3 of them being particularly old (over 100 years old).
The main variety is rabigato, having a high portion of Codega and some other varieties. It has no malvazia fina.
Vertente Tinto - 2006
Dark ruby in color, Vertente means slope.
The wine is 40% Touriga Nacional from 12-60 years old vineyards and the rest is made up of Touriga Franca, Tinat Roriz and 15 other varieties.
The aroma is port-like revealing notes of black cherries and dark plums. In the palate the ripeness of the fruit really explodes and the wine shows a lovely refreshing acidity.
Batuta - 2006
One of the best know dry table wines in Portugal. Batuta is named for the baton an orchestral conductor uses.
The fruit comes from his Quinta do Carril vineyard making this a single vineyard wine. The wine is dark ruby in colour. In the nose it has aromas of red and black cherries galore! The aroma is powerful and persistant showing a roasted edge from the oak. It's hard to believe the concentration in the palate since this wine is only 12.8% alcohol. It shows flavours of herbs, plums, black cherries and brown spices. It has plenty of tannins to last a decade. The wine is a field blend with a bit of Tinta Amarela.
"A blend of indigenous grapes (20% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinto CÜo and a host of other varieties). From Sophia Bergqvist's finest vineyards, this has deep colouring with a nose of mocha, raspberries and a hint of oak .The palate is beautifully constructed with expressive fruit and finely-wrought tannins. A warm year, fiercely hot in the high summer, but skilful tannin management and husbandry in the vines has ensured structural integrity and potential for cellaring for over five years."
Quinta De La Rosa, Douro Red - 2006
Quinta de la Rosa had been at the forefront of quality and innovation in Douro table wine production since the early 1990s, but since 2002 when Jorge Moreira was hired as winemaker, quality has stepped up in bounds and leaps. It is now one of the most respected producers in the region. The Quinta Red offers an abundance of juicy red fruit, spiced up with notes of dark chocolate. Concentrated with solid structure and mouthwatering acidity, this is an ellent food wine, that is also very approachable and ready to enjoy now.
Twenty years ago, high quality red wines from the Douro Valley were almost unheard of. This was the land of Port, one of the world's great classic wines, where the baking slopes of the valley had been painstakingly carved into narrow terraces, worked entirely by hand and planted with indigenous grapes like Tinto Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. The grapes where harvested each autumn, crushed and fermented, then the wines sent many miles down river to the lodges of Villa Nova de Gaia for ageing.
When Dieter Bohrmann, a Belgian-based businessman, bought the Quinta do Passadouro (right) in 1991 the historic 18th century estate was already well-known for its Port wines. Based in the highest quality Cima-Corgo region close to the town of Pinh‹o, He inherited ancient vines of between 50 and 70 years-old, all planted on slate soils, and a traditional winery complete with lagars in which grapes were trodden by foot.
Quinta do Passadouro - 2005
This wine is bottled though not yet released. Only around 8,000 bottles were made. It has a very deep, vibrant purple colour and fantastically vibrant, deep, lush nose of cherry and liquorice with sleek, black fruit and just a background note of nutty, marzipan oak. On the palate it is quite clamped-down and restrained at present, with an inky depth of fruit that is dark and quite closed, with spice and cherry-skin darkness and concentration. It has a dusty suggestion of muscular depth and good length. This will be release late in 2005 and has terrific potential.
Quinta do Passadouro Reserva - 2003
From a single 60 year old vineyard in the property. Lovely intense, dark, spicy ripe chocolatey nose is sweet and exotic. The palate is concentrated, rich and supple with great intensity and concentrations. Structure from fine tannins, this is a full wine with a chocolatey finish.Excellent
"Touriga Nacional, Tinto Roriz and Touriga Francesca share the honours in this early and entirely successful outing for Jorge Moreira's single vineyard Douro. 2004 was a temperate vintage; the wine as a result is drinking well now and will hold for three to five years. Dried fruits, macerated cassis and cloves, hints of white chocolate and wild raspberry."
Poeira - 2004
''Very fresh and concentrated, with a delicious array of dark plum and blackberry flavours and plenty of mineral and spice. Good whack of tannins, yet well-structured, with a long finish of dark chocolate. Best from 2008 through 2012. Only 30 cases imported.''
