Wine Comments
La Bastide du Claux 'Barraban' is made from a blend of 7 different white varietals. The average vine age is 30 years, but the Ugni Blanc is 70 years old. After fermentation the wine is aged on its lees for 9 months. Barraban is charming, well balanced with good poise and structure all the way to the finish.

The Domaine
Bastide du Claux is a small gem of a domaine in the heart of the Luberon in Provence. Sylvain Morey was born in Chassagne-Montrachet and is the son of one of the top producers, Jean-Marc Morey. As you can imagine white wines have little or no secrets for Sylvain! He could have stayed at the family domaine but after studying oenology in Dijon, he moved to Provence in 1995 and worked at his father-in-law’s vineyard. Seven years later Sylvain who had acquired a 12 hectare vineyard produced his first wines under the Bastide du Claux label.
It was a real challenge for Sylvain Morey to produce wines from cépages he was completely unfamiliar with. He had to adapt himself to the myriad of cépages as well as to the diversity of terroirs. The result is quite outstanding!
Sylvain prefers his wines to express the ‘terroir’ (which is essential for him) more so than expressing the grape varieties. “I like to have a powerful in my glass that is the prolongation of the soil.” And he adds: “My wines are made to accompany a meal. They are complex and well balanced.”
The Bastide du Claux vineyards are located at 240 meters above sea level, which in an area like Provence is vital to preserve the acidity in the wines.
This is in the small restaurant ‘Le Fournil’ in the village of Bonnieux in the heart of the Lubéron that we came across Sylvain’s wines. They were probably the finest wines of the appellation we had ever tasted. Their impeccable balance and delicate finesse are quite extraordinary in such a warm climate.

“Made from a kitchen sink blend of Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Clairette, Viognier, Ugni Blanc, Roussanne and Marsanne, the 2013 Luberon Barraban Blanc is also solid, with juicy green citrus, mint, crushed rocks and sappy herbs in its medium-bodied, clean and focused style. Brought up all in concrete, it’s a prefect, deliciously quaffable meal starter to enjoy over the coming year.” Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate
