The Strangenberg parcel is planted on a calcareous bedrock and its protected exposure provides the perfect conditions for Pinot Noir. This is vibrant Pinot Noir bursting with aromas of small red fruits, violet and delicate spices. Aged 20 months in Burgundy oak barrels, Strangenberg is structured and fresh with inviting flavours of cherries. Fruity with excellent acidity.

The Domaine
The young Agathe Bursin is an extraordinary wonderful dynamic wine grower and winemaker as well as a poet. Her 6 hectare vineyard is located in the village of Westhalten, less than 15 kilometres south of Colmar at the extreme south of the Alsace region. She inherited the family domaine in 2000 after graduating as an oenologist and obtaining a master’s degree in law (specialising in viticulture and wine) and also after training for a while in Burgundy.
As a child, Agathe would walk around the vineyards with her grandfather who gave her the love for the terroir. In the kitchen, her grandmother would let her smell wines and find out a flower or fruit dominance and she would also let her guess what was put in her mouth. These childhood experiences have contributed to Agathe’s current passion in flavours and fragrances.
A third of Bursin’s vineyard is situated in the Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé and the remaining around the village of Westhalten (Lutzentahl, Distelberg, Bollenberg et Pfingstberg), mostly on calcareous soil. This area of France is known for its micro-climate which is Mediterranean-like.
Agathe Bursin’s meticulous attention to details is the defining characteristic of both the viticulture and the vinification.
All aspects of the work in the vineyard is done by hand with love (as well as the harvest). She has a profound respect for the land, the terroir and her vines which she nurtures along the lines of biodynamy. She likes her vineyard to be permanently in ‘good health’ and uses herbal teas as remedies. She believes in the principle of organic and biodynamic viticulture but is not interested in certification.
Agathe is always looking to produce wine with purity, elegance, complexity and precision. Her production is microscopic. In fact her cellar is often compared to a ‘doll’s house’. We call her the little ‘Alsatian fairy’. Agathe Bursin is undoubtedly skilful and the reputation of her domaine far exceeds the scale of its operation.
