  1. Allegrini,`La Poja`, 2006

Tremendous colour with lovely dark perfumes of spice, dark cherries and black fruit given greater depth by an elegant mineral character. On the palate it is full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated oak and fruit in perfect balance, ripe, rounded tannins and a long, spiced finish.

  2. Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto

Guidalberto, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot kissed with Sangiovese, is a preferred drinking wine by many Bordeaux-blend-loving consumers. While not as introspective as Sassicaia, Guidalberto nonetheless shares the pedigree, quality and elegance of Sassicaia. Dense, intense and vibrant, Guidalberto shimmers with bright red cherries and brambly blackberries, even as its tannins ripple like velvet. It’s a lovely operetta of a wine, strewn with roses, dusted with spice and blessed with a striking, attenuated finish.

  3. Giorgio Primo La Massa 2001

"Broadly textured and rich, with dark aromatics leaning toward coffee, blackberry and a sniff of lemon zest. Dense plum, toast and licorice notes control the palate, and then a clean blast of chocolate rushes through. Very sweet and unctuous for Chianti, almost like dessert in a glass." Wine Enthusiast 92 points
"Velvety and rich, with plum, berry and coffee character. Full-bodied, with round tannins and a long chocolate, vanilla and berry aftertaste. Tight and refined now, but shows serious structure." Best after 2010. 5,000 cases only made." Wine Spectator 91 points

  4. Gaga Darmagi Barolo

Whereas Sperss is usually more massive and tannic, the Nebbiolo in Conteisa reflects the essence of the Cerequio terroir: expressive, floral nose with notes of red berries, plums, licorice and spices; sumptuous texture and a very refined character with perfectly integrated tannins.

  5. Marchesi Antinori - Solaia

Black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, plums and bottled fruit aromas follow each other continually in Solaia 2003. The wine is strikingly elegant with nicely blended tannins supporting the sensation of sweetness and weight. The tasting does not reveal harshness, and the balance shows distinctive sweetness from the riper grapes. Hints of liquorice and coffee return in the impressively long finish.

  7. Marchesi Antinori - Solaia

Intense ruby red colour and immediate classic, fruity aromas that are in perfect harmony with the vanilla and chocolate notes from the oak. Solaia 2006 is powerful on the palate, with a tannic texture, yet remaining smooth, with a very long finish, after time in the glass. Intense aftertaste of ripe blackberry and cherry fruit and a seemingly endless finish.

  8. Sassicaia

Sassicaia is a unique interpretation of the Cabernet variety, a wine of great breadth, complexity and longevity. The intense blackberry and cassis aromas, offset by notes of smoke and spice, are confirmed on a palate of lush concentration underscored by firm, ripe tannins carrying into a long, elegant finish.

  9. `Gran Selezione`

The nose on the 2006 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is dark and almost sensual, showing a mix of rich raspberry and cherry, followed by notes of plum, savory herbs, tobacco, hints of forest floor and mint. It is savory on the palate with silky textures contrasted by a spine of brisk acidity, resulting in a toothsome experience with dried cherry, exotic spice, tobacco and a hint of citrus. The finish is long, yet structured, showing dried red fruits, spiced orange and mountain herbs. (95 points)

  10. Sassicaia

"Explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2001 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 1997. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2001 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido."
