  1. Château Tournefeuille Lalande de Pomerol - Seán Gilley © 2011

The wine is made from 70% Merlot and 30% and Cabernet Franc. The majority of the vineyards are 30 year or older. The wine is fermented in concrete tanks, and then aged for 12 months in barriques with about 1/3 new oak used.

Stylistically, there are floral notes to complement the dark cassis fruit, dark chocolate and spice notes. There is also a silky texture and fine-grained tannins that all make for a lovely well-balanced wine.

  2. Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto

Guidalberto, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot kissed with Sangiovese, is a preferred drinking wine by many Bordeaux-blend-loving consumers. While not as introspective as Sassicaia, Guidalberto nonetheless shares the pedigree, quality and elegance of Sassicaia. Dense, intense and vibrant, Guidalberto shimmers with bright red cherries and brambly blackberries, even as its tannins ripple like velvet. It’s a lovely operetta of a wine, strewn with roses, dusted with spice and blessed with a striking, attenuated finish.

  3. Château Duhart Milon Rothschild

A strong case can be made that this is the finest Duhart produced since the 1982. The colour is a saturated dark ruby/purple. The bouquet offers aromas of blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, and dried herbs. Rich and intense, with considerable finesse, medium to full body, and outstanding concentration and purity. It reflects the increased attention Lafite's administrator, Charles Chevalier, has been giving this nearby estate.

  4. Château Cos d'Estournel, 2ème Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Estèphe

According to Robert Parker: "The 1970 Cos d'Estournel's colour remains an impressive dark garnet with ruby/purple tints. The wine is medium to full-bodied, tannic, rustic, and concentrated…It will keep for another 25 years." 89 points Wine Spectator. Four star rating from Michael Broadbent.

  5. Giorgio Primo La Massa 2001

"Broadly textured and rich, with dark aromatics leaning toward coffee, blackberry and a sniff of lemon zest. Dense plum, toast and licorice notes control the palate, and then a clean blast of chocolate rushes through. Very sweet and unctuous for Chianti, almost like dessert in a glass." Wine Enthusiast 92 points
"Velvety and rich, with plum, berry and coffee character. Full-bodied, with round tannins and a long chocolate, vanilla and berry aftertaste. Tight and refined now, but shows serious structure." Best after 2010. 5,000 cases only made." Wine Spectator 91 points

  6. Château Lynch Bages 2008

Lynch-Bages 2008 displays nice aromas of cranberry, dried floral notes, and tobacco. The palate has nice energy and acidity with excellent tannin structure. A very good combination of intensity, depth, and structure.

  7. Vega Sicilia "Valbuena 5"

The Valbuena red has aged for less time than the Vega Sicilia Único. It is a wine that comes from the younger vines and, it is mostly made with the varieties of Tempranillo and more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. It has the garnet cherry red colour of its older brother, with orangey undertones, the ethereal expression of its alcohol content and the accent of an excellent oxidative evolution, which is the fruit of oak that has been well tanned, which is a characteristic of the company's red wines. Its personality is reminiscent of the varieties used, with a hint of ripe red fruit. In the mouth, it has less structure than the Vega Sicilia Único, but holds the complexity of the wine-fruit association.

  8. Château Léoville Barton

Deep ruby. Wonderfully perfumed nose offers cassis, minerals, tobacco, flowers, mocha and truffle. Bright, mineral-driven and concentrated, with terrific underlying backbone giving energy and definition to the dark berry, mineral and chocolate flavours. There's a floral lift here that's exhilarating to find in the very ripe 2005 vintage. Finishes very long and classy, with a firm tannic spine. An outstanding vintage for this wine.96 Points Wine Spectator

  9. Marchesi Antinori - Solaia

Black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, plums and bottled fruit aromas follow each other continually in Solaia 2003. The wine is strikingly elegant with nicely blended tannins supporting the sensation of sweetness and weight. The tasting does not reveal harshness, and the balance shows distinctive sweetness from the riper grapes. Hints of liquorice and coffee return in the impressively long finish.
