"Very elegant, this is all in the details: precise and silky texture, mouthwatering acidity and a smoky, mineral undertow that enriches flavours of patisserie pear, crystallized honey, kumquat and toasted almond. Offers a clean, citrus-tinged finish. Drink now through 2027."

Lafite’s second wine has become stronger over recent vintages as the selection for the grand vin has become Draconian under administrator Charles Chevalier. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Carruades de Lafite (48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) exhibits sweet, crunchy, savory, black cherry, and raspberry fruit along with hints of road tar, spring flowers, and a touch of minerality. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 12-13 years.

Whereas Sperss is usually more massive and tannic, the Nebbiolo in Conteisa reflects the essence of the Cerequio terroir: expressive, floral nose with notes of red berries, plums, licorice and spices; sumptuous texture and a very refined character with perfectly integrated tannins.

Intensely perfumed, expressive aromas of red and dark berry compote, smoky minerals and incense, along with a deep note of black cardamom. Palate-saturating raspberry and kirsch flavours are complicated by suggestions of licorice pastille and candied lavender, with silky tannins adding support. Becomes sappier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and mineral-laced red fruit character.

"Vibrant and mouthwatering, this offers a range of patisserie pear and apple fruit, candied lemon zest, pastry dough and marzipan notes set on a finely detailed texture, which imparts a great deal of finesse. The lasting finish echoes a smoky mineral note. Drink now through 2025."

The 1985 is a gorgeously open-knit Barton with a sweet nose of lead pencil, sweet black cherries and currants, and a hint of underbrush and new oak. Medium-to-full-bodied with expansiveness, supple tannins, and outstanding concentration, this is a beautifully made wine that still tastes like it is an adolescent and may even have an ever greater upside as it continues to age. The low acidity and sweet tannins, however, suggest it has entered its plateau of maturity. Anticipated maturity: now-2018.

Rich magenta colour. Powerful, intense, black fruit and cherry aromas with lovely fragrant aromatic notes. On the mouth this wine is in perfect harmony with beautifully balanced fruit and tannins. Rich, elegant, luscious black fruit flavours. Enormous concentration with again this attractive scented quality coming through. Long rich finish. Very stylish.

The Chambolle Muigny 2012 village from Roumier is still youthful – but also unexpectedly open and ready to please. The bouquet fresh and playful red berry fruit with some darker notes of blue berries and cassis. On the palate juicy red berry fruit – quite vibrant, rich and airy – with a slight candied note. It’s quite accessible and red fruited for the age – has lovely balance and length for this level. Really adore the nerve and juicyness in this wine …. a fine, complex and beautiful 2012 from Roumier. Classic Chambolle!

A powerful, well-toned Champagne, featuring coconut, toast, grapefruit and coffee aromas and flavours. There are plenty of bass notes, punctuated by crisp acidity, and it all comes together on the fine texture, with aftertaste of roasted hazelnut and coffee. Drink now through 2018.
