  1. Domaine Guiberteau - Breze

The Brézé terroir creates a far more citrusy, floral expression of Chenin variety when grown appropriately. It is as close to Riesling as it is to the stereotype of Chenin. Even when they're ripe and lush, the wines remain stubbornly cool and pure. This one switches register from the staccato of the wines above to a more cavernous tone, certainly modelled on the Rougeard wine. (The Foucault brothers at Rougeard are close friends and mentors to this young grower.) Echoing the intensity and minerality of the vineyard, here we find an aromatic profile of remarkable precision: fleshy white peach, iodine and nectarine notes. The taste is enigmatic, never easy to define. The palate is rock dusty and dense, long and taut with a racy saline finish. Romain's Brézé is cropped at a low 30 hl/ha and allowed to ferment naturally in one-and-two-year-old wooden, 228 litre Burgundian barrels after which it's simply left alone for up to 24 months on its fine lees. Resolute, 'grand cru' Chenin.

  2. Domaine Guiberteau - "Les Motelles"

100% Cabernet Franc. Les Montelles comes from a mature single-site in the south of the appellation near the village of Montreuil-Bellay. The name seems to reference a rocky terroir - perhaps reflecting the gravelly component of this clay-dominant vineyard. The site is a 1.4 ha lieu-dit planted by Romain's grand-père in 1955. Cropped at a freakishly low 25 hl/ha - well below what is permitted for Grand Cru Burgundy - it is naturally fermented in concrete before resting for 18 months in a mix of one, two, and three year old barrels. Romain is not a fan of over- extracted wines so the low yield of this cuvee doesn't result in overt concentration of fruit. Instead we have a supple density, a sleek, pulpy texture and perfectly ripe tannins. Les Motelles is full of the discreet, flirtatious charms of the finest Saumur rouge.
