  1. Gewurztraminer, Clos Saint Urbain Selection de Grains Nobles, Grand Cru

This delicious white is big, lush, and warm, with apricot, grapefruit and spice flavours that are easy to cozy up to as it glides to a long, smoky finish. There's plenty of power in reserve, with a dry sensation on the aftertaste. Drink now through 2020. 541 cases made.

  2. La Landonne Côte Rôtie

Opaque purple, bordering on black in colour, La Landonne's aromatics are the most subdued of the 1987s. Although still closed, this wine is very powerful, rich, thick, and represents the essence of the Syrah grape. That earthy, mineral, truffle, licorice component is just beginning to poke its head through this massively framed wine. It is remarkable that this vintage produced a wine of such extraordinary concentration and richness. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020.

  3. La Mouline Côte Rôtie

"The black/purple-coloured 2005 Côte Rôtie La Mouline offers up scents of soy, bacon fat, barbecue smoke, espresso roast, and a hint of caramelized chocolate. While enormously rich, opulent, and fleshy, even in this tannic, structured year, it possesses a finesse and softness that are hard to believe. This stunning 2005 should drink beautifully for 25 or more years." Wine Advocate

  4. La Mouline Côte Rôtie

"Very perfumy and alluring, with lots of espresso, sandalwood and black tea notes all mingling together, while velvety crushed plum, fig and blackberry fruit glides in behind them. Hints of mesquite and iron play out on the well-integrated finish. Accessible, but will cellar easily too. Best from 2011 through 2032."

  5. La Landonne Côte Rôtie

"Another candidate for perfection is the 2005 Côte Rôtie La Landonne. Its inky/blue/purple colour is followed by a perfume of confit of duck, smoked meats, blackberries, espresso, and tapenade. Incredibly complex with superb concentration, amazing depth, full body, and huge tannins in the finish, it will not be ready to drink for 5-8 years; it should keep for 30-35 years." 6. Opus One

Purity and brilliance on the nose with so much currant and flower character. Roses, currant bush and fresh leaves, too. Brightness is the word that comes to mind. Full-bodied and broad-shouldered. Juicy and so gorgeous now. Balance is so wonderful here. All about harmonious fruit and tannin balance. I like it slightly better than the excellent 2014. 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot and 2% Malbec. Drink or hold. James Suckling

  7. Château Lynch Bages 1970

Cedar, tar & tobacco notes on the nose with black raspberries and cherry liqueur on the palate. Full bodied, dense, masculine, this is a big, beefy, classic style of Lynch Bages.

  8. Barbeito Sercial 1963

Particularly good vintage for Sercial. Fragrant, clean-cut with along dry fleshy finish. Exhilarating !

  9. La Mouline Côte Rôtie

"Dark red colour. Pungently floral aromas meld smoky red berries, exotic rose petal, dried lavender and magnolia blossom. Dense and extremely sweet, showing an explosive array of red fruit flavours along with exotic floral and sweet tobacco tones and an overlay of smoky bacon and bonfires. A bright mineral tone sharpens the fruit, adding focus and precision to the flavours. The finish builds and deepens but maintains superb elegance and silkiness of texture, finishing on notes of wild red berries and rose oil.' 96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

  10. Guigal "La Turque" Côte Rôtie

"Packed with blackberry and raspberry fruit, this is a bit of a brute now, with a brick wall of tannins hiding the espresso, mocha, mineral and tar flavours. Shows terrific intensity and drive through the finish, as the fruit gains more and more depth thanks to mouthwatering acidity. This will age for a generation. Best from 2008 through 2030." 97 points Wine Spectator
