The palate is exactly as I have found the previous dozen or so bottles I have tasted: structured, delineated, intense, aristocratic and imperious. There is a sense of bravura here, of aristocracy. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous black fruit, perhaps beginning to soften in texture, one or two years off its plateau. It offers a tell-tale cassis-scented nose, and a monolithic, medium to full-bodied style with relatively high, austere tannin in the finish (a characteristics I also noticed in cask). A dry, angular, backward effort for the vintage, it should be forgotten for at least a decade. Let’s hope the fruit continues to expand and sweeten, but that’s no sure thing. The bottled wine is even better than its individual component parts. It boasts a dense, saturated deep ruby colour, as well as a flamboyant, intense bouquet of crushed pepper, Provencal herbs, black raspberry jam, and smoky sweet oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with good underlying acidity, but much more voluptuous and unctuous than it appeared to be from cask. Long, concentrated, and explosively rich, this wine may merit an even higher score after it has had some time to mesh together in bottle. It is a terrific Côte-Rôtie to drink over the next 10-15+ years." Score: 92 points Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

The extraordinary 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is more structured, powerful, and concentrated than the 1997. Les Montelles comes from a mature single-site in the south of the appellation near the village of Montreuil-Bellay. The name seems to reference a rocky terroir - perhaps reflecting the gravelly component of this clay-dominant vineyard. The site is a 1.4 ha lieu-dit planted by Romain's grand-père in 1955. Cropped at a freakishly low 25 hl/ha - well below what is permitted for Grand Cru Burgundy - it is naturally fermented in concrete before resting for 18 months in a mix of one, two, and three year old barrels. Romain is not a fan of over- extracted wines so the low yield of this cuvee doesn't result in overt concentration of fruit. Instead we have a supple density, a sleek, pulpy texture and perfectly ripe tannins.
