Producer's Profile

Sylvain Potin

In 2006, Anne-Claude Leflaive, who produced some of the rare and world-class Chardonnays at her mythical domaine in Puligny-Montrachet, decided to support young biodynamic wine growers around France. Unfortunately, the project in the Loire Valley was struggling and in 2008, Anne-Claude and her husband Christian Jacques decided to save the estate. So they purchased the practically abandoned vineyards, which had hardly produced any fruit. Fully aware of the huge potential of the vineyards, they did not want to let the estate go into ruins. Conscious that a vineyard needs daily care which they couldn’t honour from Burgundy, they chose to employ a winemaker.

In 2009, the couple met Sylvain Potin, a passionate sommelier-turned-winemaker who was well-versed in biodynamic viticulture and farming. Potin followed and respected Anne-Claude Leflaive’s precise instructions and philosophy. They set about restoring the vineyards and doing replanting.

Today, the ten-hectare vineyard is mainly planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and an almost centenary Grolleau plot. As a producer of Chardonnay, Anne-Claude always aspired to craft a great white at Clau de Nell. In 2011, a few neighbouring parcels were acquired and subsequently planted with Chenin. Sadly, Anne-Claude died and she never got to enjoy her dream white wine from Anjou.

Showing immense courage, Christian and his daughter Claire together with Sylvain are continuing the adventure initiated by Anne-Claude. Sylvain Potin is determined to honour the biodynamic legacy of the estate and is constantly searching for perfection.

The reds express incredible purity. They are dense, packed with energy, charming, and silky. As for the Chenin, it portrays vibrancy, aromatic intensity and pure elegance and refinement. Clau de Nell wines are serious. They have a heart and a soul, and this jewel estate is in the very capable hands of Sylvain Potin, who produces wines of ultimate precision.
