Languedoc

The story of Clos Marie began in the early 1990s when Christophe Peyrus took over the twenty-hectare family vineyard located in the village of Lauret, on the southern slope of the mythical Pic Saint Loup, at an altitude of 260 metres.

The harvest was previously sold to the local cooperative. When Christophe Peyrus and his partner Françoise Julien settled at Clos Marie, things changed rapidly and, in 1995 they released their first vintage.

Influenced by some of the greatest French winemakers, such as the late Didier Dagueneau in the Loire and Olivier Julien of Mas Jullien in Terrasses du Larzac, Peyrus and Julien soon became conscious that their terroir itself needed to be crafted.

Nowadays, their understanding of the Pic Saint Loup’s unique terroir is colossal. Their attention to Clos Marie’s vineyards is tremendous. Each of their vines - as old as 100 years - has a story to tell and they are familiar with it.

The clay and chalky limestone soils are ploughed by horses. Their soils are alive, and the flora and fauna thrive in a healthy environment.

Christophe excels in winemaking “I love making wine and blending. I love the extraordinary gesture of transforming a fruit into alcohol; one becomes a messenger.”

Then follows the ageing in the underground cellar, a place of silence, where the wines spent a portion of their lives and express their personalities.

Spirited with fiery eyes, yet very charming, Peyrus is a passionate farmer, a skilled winemaker who has taken risks in order to make it possible to produce top class wines in a formerly forsaken area.

After studying Agronomy and Agriculture, Simon, who is Christophe and Françoise’s son, recently joined the estate. A well capable and bright young man who, from a very young age, helped in the vineyards as well as in the cellar, Simon will no doubt share ideas with his parents and move Clos Marie forward.

Often stylistically referred to as Northern Rhône, the wines of Clos Marie are the most respected in the region. They are fabulously pure and firm, with age-worthy profiles. In one word, they are glorious.
