Rhône Valley

The estate dates back to 1696, and still remains in the same family. The proprietor, Jean-Pierre Cartier’s mother, Augusta Cartier née Goubert, gave her name to the domaine in order to preserve her maiden name.

Idyllically located at the foothills of the spectacular jagged limestone landmark Dentelles de Montmirail, in an unspoilt sector of the southern Rhône Valley, Domaine les Goubert spreads over 23 hectares of vineyards, scattered across four appellations: Gigondas, Beaumes de Venise, Sablet, and Côtes du Rhône. The 40 parcels are planted with Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault, Mouvèdre, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussane, Viognier, and Clairette.

The daily tasks in the vineyards are conducted with immense love and respect for the land handed down by Jean-Pierre’s ancestors. They eschew any synthetic products in favour of the natural life in their vineyards.

In 1985, Monsieur Cartier was the first vigneron in the appellation to age a fraction of his Gigondas in new oak barrels as a matter of policy. 1985 is also the year his daughter Florence was born, and he released a special cuvée in her honour called Cuvée Florence. This particular red ages 24 months in barrels before bottling.

Late 2014, following her studies in viticulture and oenology, Florence joined her father. She has since been more meticulous with the winemaking, therefore giving extra finesse to the wines. Although her father still gives her a helping hand, Florence is a very articulate and confident winemaker.

Jean-Pierre, a tall, well-built man, and his daughter Florence, an astute lady, produce wines that have been reliably delicious since we started working with them in the late 1990s. The reds are deep, textured yet subtle, and tight-knit wines, marked by succulent drinkability. As for the whites, they display concentration, exuberance, and style with mineral backbone.
