100% Cabernet Franc. Les Montelles comes from a mature single-site in the south of the appellation near the village of Montreuil-Bellay. The name seems to reference a rocky terroir - perhaps reflecting the gravelly component of this clay-dominant vineyard. The site is a 1.4 ha lieu-dit planted by Romain's grand-père in 1955. Cropped at a freakishly low 25 hl/ha - well below what is permitted for Grand Cru Burgundy - it is naturally fermented in concrete before resting for 18 months in a mix of one, two, and three year old barrels. Romain is not a fan of over- extracted wines so the low yield of this cuvee doesn't result in overt concentration of fruit. Instead we have a supple density, a sleek, pulpy texture and perfectly ripe tannins. Les Motelles is full of the discreet, flirtatious charms of the finest Saumur rouge.
Romain Guiberteau is one of Saumur’s brightest talents. He produces world-class wines from his 15 hectares, which he farms in exemplary fashion on prestigious terroirs.
