100% Chenin Blanc. This Guiberteau vineyard is monopole of younger vine material grown on a clay / limestone terroir that has only 30 cm of top soil and then pure chalky bedrock. The Clos de Guichaux is in Bizay, very near Brézé and was planted with massale cuttings taken from the family's best old vines in Brézé. This was done in the early 2000s. So far Romain has planted 1.5ha of this three hectare Clos. The wine spent 10 months in two to four year old barrels. The nose offers shades of crystallised white stone fruit and earth that emerge, somewhat reluctantly, with air. It's a far more elemental nose than the apple 'n' honey varietal Chenin Blanc stereotype. It's got that exquisite tension between stony, textural, compact juice and electric freshness that you find in the very best 2010 whites from northern France; in spite of their powerful extracts the wines seem positively airy. The wine persists long after swallowing and leaves the mouth ice-clean and buzzing for another glass.
Romain Guiberteau is one of Saumur’s brightest talents. He produces world-class wines from his 15 hectares, which he farms in exemplary fashion on prestigious terroirs.
